About this episode
Kalie Shorr wrote Fight Like a Girl in a room with two friends ten years ago. It became an anthem.
The song charted independently. She owned it outright. She built her career on zero budget, reinvesting every dollar back into the next project. But when she went to major labels, they said no, and noted they'd "already signed a girl this year".
So she kept fighting. She got her masters back from her old label. She re-recorded everything. Only women worked on it. She owns it now, completely.
But Kalie's fight goes beyond the music. At twenty, on her first red carpet in the middle of Fight Like a Girl's success, she was diagnosed with endometriosis. She had to manage brutal treatments while touring nearly two hundred shows a year. She moved states just to access healthcare that actually worked.
And she's turned all of that into advocacy. She consults other artists on taking control of their work. She speaks openly about women's health research. She's shown survivors that their fight matters, and their stories deserve to be heard.
This is the story of someone who refused to let anyone own her but herself.
Every woman has a story worth telling. This is hers.
